Maryland bridges are a type of dental bridge that are held in place by a porcelain or metal framework, rather than being cemented to your teeth.
They’re a great way to replace a missing tooth, because they don’t require any grinding down of the adjacent teeth, like traditional dental bridges do. Instead, they’re held in place by a metal or porcelain framework that’s bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth.
The only downside to Maryland bridges is that they’re not as strong as traditional bridges. They’re best used for replacing front teeth, because they don’t have to withstand the same kind of biting forces that your back teeth do.
If you’re missing a front tooth, then Maryland bridges are a great way to replace it. They’re strong enough to withstand the biting forces of your front teeth, and they look just like natural teeth.
The first step is to have your teeth prepared. This involves removing a small amount of enamel from the back of the adjacent teeth. It’s a completely painless procedure, and it’s done to make room for the metal or porcelain framework that will hold your Maryland bridge in place.
After your teeth have been prepared, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth. This is so that your Maryland bridge can be custom made to fit your mouth perfectly. The impression is sent off to a dental lab, and it usually takes a week or two for your Maryland bridge to be made.
When your Maryland bridge is ready, you’ll be called back to have it fitted. We’ll bond the framework to the back of your teeth, and then we’ll check to make sure that your Maryland bridge fits properly.
That’s it! You’ll be able to walk out with a brand new tooth that looks and feels just like a natural tooth.
